Origine del titolo
Il titolo dell'antologia deriva da una dichiarazione del 1831 di Maria W. Stewart ( 1803-1880), la prima donna afroamericana a tenere conferenze pubbliche, in cui diceva: "O figlie dell'Africa, svegliatevi! Svegliati! In piedi! Non dormi più ma fatti notare. Mostra al mondo i tuoi doni e le tue nobili ed elevate facoltà personali ” .

Il libro è stato ben accolto al momento della pubblicazione. Evie Arup scrive sul Weekly Journal : “ Daughters of Africa è un'opera letteraria di primo piano. Mai prima d'ora le opere di donne di origine africana, su scala globale, sono state riunite in un unico volume ” . L' editorialista indipendente osserva: "Questo libro può sembrare letteratura, ma alla fine è anche una testimonianza del potere del linguaggio" . Il Library Journal definisce l'antologia un "testo prezioso" , mentre il Washington Post la considera "un meraviglioso punto di partenza per qualsiasi lettore interessato a scoprire le voci silenziose, dimenticate e sottovalutate delle donne di colore" .
