Barbara Hambly , nata il28 agosto 1951a San Diego negli Stati Uniti , è uno scrittore americano di fantasy e fantascienza .

Biografia

Barbara Hambly ha vissuto i primi anni della sua vita a Montclair , in California . Ha poi studiato in Australia e presso l' Università Bordeaux III e l' Università della California a Riverside, dove ha conseguito un master in storia medievale nel 1975 .

Sceglie velocemente di dedicarsi solo alla scrittura, ma, seguendo i consigli di amici che le certificano che è impossibile sfondare e guadagnare soldi come scrittrice, cerca altre professioni e sarà rispettivamente insegnante , modella , cameriera, editrice. , impiegato in un negozio di liquori e insegnante di karate . Infine, il suo primo romanzo , Les force de la nuit , è stato pubblicato nel 1982 e il successo gli ha permesso di dedicarsi esclusivamente alla sua passione.

Dal 1994 al 1996 è stata presidente dei Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America . È la prima specialista di fantasy a ricoprire un incarico precedentemente riservato agli scrittori di fantascienza .

Sebbene sia particolarmente nota per i suoi romanzi fantasy (in particolare il Darwarth Cycle e la serie Winterlands ), ha anche scritto diverse storie di vampiri ( Quelli che cacciano la notte e In viaggio con i morti ), una serie poliziesca e si è avventurata in franchise commerciali, come Star Trek ( Ishmael , Ghost Walker e Crossroad ) e Star Wars per Jedi Children e Twilight Planet .

Ha sposato George Alec Effinger poco prima della sua morte.
