I Protorothyrididae sono una famiglia di piccoli rettili fossili . I loro teschi non avevano una finestra temporale , come fanno anche le tartarughe moderne. Questa famiglia visse dal tardo Carbonifero al primo Permiano , nell'attuale Nord America .
Molti dei primi generi di rettili furono inizialmente considerati protorotiridi. Tuttavia, nel 2006, alcuni generi come, tra gli altri, Brouffia , Coelostegus , Paleothyris e Hylonomus , sono stati classificati tra gli eureptili più basali .
