Larry Semon (nato il16 luglio 1889a West Point , Mississippi , e morì8 ottobre 1928a Victorville , California ) è un regista , attore , sceneggiatore e produttore cinematografico americano di film muti , che ha avuto il suo periodo di massimo splendore negli anni '20 e da allora è caduto nell'oblio. In Francia , è conosciuto con il nome del personaggio che interpreta: "Zigoto".

Biografia

Nato Lawrence Semon a Westpoint nel Mississippi , Larry Semon proviene da una linea di artisti. Suo padre è un mago, ventriloquo e artista di vaudeville, proprio come sua madre che è anche la sua compagna. Molto presto ha mostrato doni per la commedia, la danza e soprattutto il canto. Sebbene incoraggiato a perseguire una carriera artistica, ha comunque proseguito gli studi universitari a Savannah , in Georgia . È stato al college che si è infortunato al collo nella squadra di calcio : ha avuto delle conseguenze e in particolare ha perso la voce.

Contemporaneamente agli studi, prende lezioni di disegno ed è come disegnatore che inizia a lavorare su vari giornali.

Gli inizi

Parallelamente al suo lavoro di designer e grafico, segue le orme dei suoi genitori e sale sui consigli di amministrazione. Sul palco si esibì in pantomime e monologhi comici e attirò l'attenzione degli studi della Vitagraph Company con cui firmò un contratto nel 1915 .

Rapidamente dimostra di essere un ingegnoso gagman e dalla scrittura passa rapidamente alla regia di cortometraggi di commedie burlesche. Hughie Mack era all'epoca una delle star degli studi e Larry Semon scriveva e dirigeva le sue apparizioni. Ha diretto più di 30 film per quest'ultimo. Lavora anche per Frank Daniels , un'altra star di Vitagraph che interpreta il personaggio del Capitano Jinks.

Nel 1917 prese sempre più importanza con il Vitagraph e gli fu anche affidata la produzione e la scrittura delle commedie di Jimmy Aubrey . Insieme al suo lavoro come regista e sceneggiatore, Larry Semon appare in ruoli secondari sempre più importanti nei suoi film.
