È noto soprattutto per il suo lavoro alla All Japan Pro Wrestling, dove ha reso popolare il wrestling hardcore in Giappone. Nel 2011 è stato inserito nella Hall of Fame della World Wrestling Entertainment .

Shreve è cresciuto a Windsor in Ontario in una povera famiglia di dieci. Pratica karate e judo .

A 17 anni, Shreve attirò l'attenzione del promotore di wrestling Jack Britton che gli offrì di lavorare nella sua piccola federazione a Montreal.
